Review of Tree Safety at Glen of the Downs Nature Reserve

Date Released: Tuesday, December 23, 2025

NPWS is aware of some public concerns following the marking of some trees in the Glen of the Downs Nature Reserve with eco-friendly paint.

Following a report from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) that shows recent incidents of falling trees and branches creating a serious public safety hazard on the N11 at the Glen of the Downs, NPWS has engaged a contractor to carry out a review of tree safety. The contractor has used this paint to identify some trees. A report was received from the contractor this morning and will be reviewed in the coming weeks, with the intention of carrying out some safety works in collaboration with TII in February 2026.

NPWS wishes to assure the public that only necessary public safety works will take place, and trimming/crown reduction will be used where possible. Glen of the Downs Nature Reserve is a Special Area of Conservation and any works will be covered by an ecological test known as a “Screening for Appropriate Assessment”, considering the impacts on the “old oak woodland” habitat.

As part of our management of Glen of the Downs Nature Reserve, which includes a programme of tackling invasive species and a recent land acquisition, NPWS plans for the Glen of the Downs Nature Reserve to have excellent condition woodland habitats, safe and enjoyable walking trails and a safe passage along the N11 for all travelling that road.

We wish you the best for the holiday season and will provide further information in January of 2026.
