This guidance note provides advice to prospective renewable energy project applicants on how they should engage with the NPWS in the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage in the context of new procedures laid down by the revised Renewable Energy Directive (RED III). RED III aims to speed up and simplify the delivery of renewable energy infrastructure. RED III entered into force on 20 November 2023 and has been transposed into national law in Ireland by the European Union (Planning and Development) (Renewable Energy) Regulations 2025 (S.I. 274 of 2025) (“the RED III Regulations”).

This new guidance applies to both onshore and offshore renewable energy developments.
