Ballygilgan (Lissadell) Nature Reserve

Co. Sligo

Location: A large grass field sloping south-westwards from the public road from Carney to Lissadell to the shore of Drumcliff Bay.

Area (ha.): 29.5. Established in 1986. State owned.

Animals and Plants of Interest: The largest Irish mainland flock of Barnacle Geese graze on the reserve from October to May. It is a site of international importance for Barnacle Geese due to the number it supports (c.3,000 birds). In the summer the reserve is grazed by livestock.

Access: Via the N4 Sligo to Donegal road, turn left at Drumcliff and go through the village of Carney. After one kilometre, the reserve is on the left. Beyond the reserve, turn left at the Lissadell House sign, a bird hide is accessible from a path running along the shore, from a slipway (5 min walk).

 

Easkey Bog Nature Reserve

Co. Sligo

Location: Situated on the northern side of the Ox mountains.

Area (ha.): 607
This is one of the few extensive areas of intermediate blanket bogs in the country. It stretches between lowland and mountain blanket bog; the area grades into mountain blanket bog to the south while an extensive area of lowland blanket bog occurs about 2 km to the west. One of the few places in the county where all three blanket bog types are more or less juxtaposed. Established in 1990. State owned.

Animals and Plants of Interest: Red Grouse and Curlew can be found and Golden Plover can be found here only during the winter when they visit from Iceland. The Irish Hare also makes its home there.
