Biodiversity is a term used to describe the variety of living things on the Earth. Estimates of the total number of species on earth range from 5 to 100 million, the best estimate is believed to be around 14 million. Biodiversity is fundamental to our daily lives providing us with all our food, much of our raw materials and many of our medicines. Our National Biodiversity Plan was formulated in 2002 and a new plan is in preparation for publication. Learn about Irish, European and International Biodiversity initiatives. |
